Q. Tell us about your company.
As the oldest real estate company in Tulsa, we proudly boast of our long, successful history dating back to February, 1938. Founded by Seth Hughes and Morgan Jones as Hughes &Jones, REALTORS, we have been the leader in home sales in Tulsa from the beginning.
In 1986, Jones' son in-law, Sheldon Detrick, purchased the company, and the name was changed to DETRICK, Hughes & Jones, REALTORS under which it operated for nine years. During this time, The Rooney Company, REALTORS was acquired in 1989.
In April, 1995, Detrick purchased The Prudential Properties of Oklahoma and the combined result was The Prudential Detrick Realty. Many employees and associates have been with the company 20 years or more.
The ownership and management consists of Gordon Everage, president and general manager; and The Detrick Companies - Sheldon Detrick, CEO; and Dan Staudt, CFO.
The Prudential Detrick Realty is a full-service company and a leader in relocation, training and technology. The company has two mega-offices in Tulsa with approximately 200 sales associates and an estimated sales volume for 1996 approaching $200 million. The traits we look for in an agent that we feel will be successful is one that has a lot of interests, goal driven, a good educational background, a person with a good attitude and an open mind and imagination.
Q. What kind of past experience are you looking for?
Successful and busy, from housewife and mother, to a teacher. With experience or with no experience as long as their attitude is good and they are willing to learn.
Q. About what percentage of your agents started new with your company?
About half of our associates started with our company. The other half came from other companies. Most of our associates have been brought into our company by prospecting through management or by our existing associates. Very simple, "Build a company for success of the associates and they will come."
Q. About what percentage of agents that start with your company are still with your company a year later?
We have a good success rate of around 90% who stay the full first year.
Q. What kind of training and support do your agents get?
We are very proud of our training program. The knowledge base is always being updated and provided to all associates. Our associates take pride in showing their knowledge with our other associate.

Q. What are the average start-up fees with your company?
We want our new associates to look at this opportunity as a career and with a business plan that they can invest in. The actual fees are about $800.00. But there are other expenses to consider if you are going to start out equal with competition: a lap top, car phone or hand phone, software for laptop and etc. This could be another $5,000 to $7,000.
Many people fail in this business because they enter with so little reserves.
Q. How are you and your company adapting to the information age?
We are on the Internet. We have a web-site and our own server. We are on the cutting edge of real estate technology. We have a duty to stay current for our associates and the buying and selling public.

Q. Where do you see the best opportunities in real estate in the near future?
The opportunities in real estate in the near future is in residential sales. The business is changing by the day and there are services that have not even been thought of yet. We will continue to be a leader and when the dust settles on all the changes that are going on, we will be a winner-moving ahead. We look forward to the future.
Q. What do you see for the industry 5 years out?
The industry will not be the same, will not look the same as it does today. There will be fewer associates in the real estate business and they will have high tech skills. They will provide more services, provide more information and be a true professional.
Q. About how much a year does an average full time agent make at your company after one to two years of experience?
It depends on the individual. We have full time associates making from $15,000 to $150,000 a year. To answer your question, from $12,000 to $35,000 after one or two years.
Q. Tell us something about yourself.
Tell us something about yourself. I am from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Central High School, Graduate of the University of Tulsa-Business school. My wife, Suzanne is in real estate. We like to travel and we love our boat on Grand Lake. I have been in real estate since 1964 and I never got up in the morning feeling like "I have to go to work". It's fun and it's a challenge. I am past president of Greater Tulsa Association of Realtors with membership around 2500 brokers and associates, past president of our MLS, past director of Tulsa Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to the future in real estate and many more years of working with management and associates.
